These days the term ‘Afrobeat’ has gotten a new meaning internationally, with the penetration of African pop music, and the widespread need for international pop acts to lean on it for inspiration, and new direction.
Wizkid collaborated with Drake and Kyla for the chart-topping song ‘One Dance’ which has co-production contributions from DJ Maphorisa and Sarz. Alicia Keys’ return to mainstream music with her single ‘In common’ has been touted to have drum elements of Nigerian Afrobeat Music. So also have countless materials from rappers and pop acts being fused with sonic elements originating from the shores of the Black Continent.

Stop deceiving people into believing that afrobeat was created by fella. Afrobeats as we all know was created in Ghana and later spread to Nigeria through fella. Tell the story as it is. Peace

Ghana only added to the aspect of afro beats like Jazz and funk did, and Afrobeat as a whole was not started in Ghana

Hey that’s a lie. Afrobeat as a genre was created by fela Kuti here in Nigeria. Ghanaians started highlife and not Afrobeat mind you.

Though the Afrobeat genre is growing it is not popular music as it’s has not resonated, charted in various parts of the world including many states in America. The International Global Music Chart that tracks the popularity of artists around the world still does not have one Afrobeat artist in its stop 20. An Afrobeat artist will have to do stadium tours in practically all fifty states, and across South & Central America as well as China, Asia.
